Grand Etang Viewing and Wildlife Signs

Established in 1906, the Grand Etang Forest Reserve is the oldest and largest protected area in Grenada.  The focal point of the forest reserve is the 36-acre Grand Etang Lake, which is surrounded by a rainforest which holds a diversity of flora and fauna. The reserve attracts tens of thousands of people annually who engage in rigorous expeditions, tours and hikes. The lake is the major water source of fresh water for much of the island and support eh parishes surrounding it.

 

In 2004, and 2005 both hurricanes Ivan and Emily brought great devastation to the forest reserve. Since then, tremendous resources have been invested in the clearing and re-development of trails, buildings and on reforestation efforts.

In 2012, The Seacology Foundation provided financial support to the sum of US $25,000 to assist with the construction of:

 

• Three viewing towers. Morne La Baye, Beausejour Lookout, and 1910 Lookout

 

• Three picnic tables

 

• Production/erection of interpretive signage for the reserve

 

The signs were places on or near to these towers and included topographical maps highlighting the visible land marks, photos and general information about flora and fauna

 

This project represented a unique public-private sector partnership, in which the Ministry of Tourism, which has management responsibility for national parks, collaborated with AN NGO, GFC, to ensure the successful implementation of the activities. The Ministry of Tourism was given the responsibility of long term oversight for the facilities.
